Jazz, R&B, Funk Legend George Duke Dies at Age 67 | News 92 FM

According to reports, veteran jazz, R&B, funk and fusion keyboard virtuoso George Duke has died at age 67.

What are the children of a Duke and Duchess called?

Are they also called Duke and Duchess, or if not, what are they called?

Also I think in a book I read they called some Dukes Prince are Dukes sometimes called that, and if so, why?

*I kept typing duck instead of duke, lol

Answer: There are 2 types of Dukes - Royal and non-Royal ones.

In case of Royal Dukes, if their children are male-line descendants of the Monarch, they'll be Princes and Princess of the United Kingdom. For example, Prince Andrew, The Duke of York's daughters have the style and title of Princesses because they are male-line descendants of Queen Elizabeth II.
If the children of Royal Dukes are not male-line grandchildren of the Monarch, the laws would be the same as with non-Royal dukes - they'll simply have courtesy titles of "Lords" and "Ladies (for more details, see below).

There are currently 6 Royal Dukedoms in the UK:
a) Duchy of Lancaster - held by Queen Elizabeth II (the Queen is "Duke", not "Duchess" of Lancaster - only Monarch can hold the title and only the masculine form of it exists)
b) Cornwall and Rothesay - held by Prince Charles (both titles can be held only by the Heir Apparent to the Throne)
c) Edinburgh - held by Prince Philip
d) York - held y Prince Andrew
e) Gloucester - held by Prince Richard (the son of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, who was the third son of George V and Queen Mary)
f) Kent - held by Prince Edward (the son of Prince George, Duke of Kent, who was the fourth son of George V and Queen Mary)

The case of non-Royal dukes is a bit more complicated.

1. The Heir Apparent (eldest son) of a Duke uses his father's highest lesser peerage title as his own. For example, the Duke of Devonshire's eldest son is called Marquess of Hartington. It is only a courtesy title and until the Heir Apparent inherits the full title, he's considered to be a commoner. The Heir Apparent of the Heir Apparent (the eldest son of the eldest son) will use the second highest lesser peerage title as his own, and so on.
For example, the current Duke of Wellington is Arthur Wellesley, 8th Duke of Wellington. His Heir Apparent (eldest son) is Charles Wellesley, Marquess of Douro (Marquess of Douro is the 8th Duke's highest lesser peerage title). Marquess of Douro's Heir Apparent (eldest son) is Arthur Wellesley, Earl of Mornington (Earl of Mornington is the 8th Duke's second highest lesser peerage title). Earl of Mornington's Heir Apparent (eldest son) is Arthur Wellesley, Viscount Wellesley (Viscount Wellesley being the third highest lesser peerage title of the 8th Duke). Once Arthur Wellesley, 8th Duke of Wellington passes away, everyone will 'move up' one step (the current Marquess of Douro will be 9th Duke of Wellington, the current Earl of Mornington will be Marquess of Douro, the current Viscount Wellesley will be Earl of Mornington).

2. Younger sons of Dukes add "Lord" before their first names (e.g. Lord Andrew) as courtesy titles, while the daughters use its feminine form - "Lady". These children are considered commoners; "Lord" and "Lady" are merely courtesy titles, same as "Honourable", etc.

Is it possible that George Zimmerman acted in self defense?

Al Sharpton seems to have a knack for supporting and promoting racial conflict where none existed in the first place. Tawana Brawley, Duke Lacrosse.

Answer: Until we know the facts and not what Al says, which is often inflammatory and race baiting we do not know what happened.
Al became famous for the Tawana Brawley case and was never held accountable for defaming the police when it was proved she made up the story.

I am working on research for a production of Henry VI Part III, and I cannot get a definitive answer about this. I am referring to George, Duke of Clarence (Edward IV and Richard IIIs brother). Is it Clarence, Wales? Or Clare, Suffolk? Is the latter, why is there also a designated Duke of Suffolk?

Thanks.

Answer: You are correct in you question the lands are from Clare in Suffolk, and is currently administered as part of the Duchy of Lancaster

if you feel st george is too vague and distant a figure to celebrate, which other more genuinely english/brit?

british hero would you prefer to celebrate in saint georges place?
king arthur is for me the obvious choice, with perhaps richard the lionheart and robin hood running a distant 2nd and 3rd.

incidentally, has there ever been a good feature film made about the george and the dragon legend?

Answer: I'm not keen on national days usually, even less keen on them having any form of religious slant so the whole St George thing means little to me.
Stepping over to King Arthur seems a bit pointless as you're going from one mythical figure to another, and again the tone is overtly religious. If you want a founder, then perhaps Alfred the Great would be a better option, because at least he is documented and was genuinely praiseworthy.

I wouldn't want William the Conqueror as I hate him. Perhaps a commemoration of the Glorious revolution - except the Irish would hate that.

I don't know really, we've no shortage of prominent figures... Duke of Wellington, Issac Newton, Charles Darwin, William Shakespeare, Ismbard Kingdom Brunel, Edward Elgar, James Cook, Adam Smith, Robert Stephenson, Lloyd George, Winston Churchill. The list goes on.

I think on balance I'm not sure we need a figure to identify in. Britain or any of its constituent nations is an idea in itself and celebratable in itself. Perhaps we should commemorate certain birthdays of luminaries, but if I had to pick just one, then I'd likely opt for Chrurchill, Shakespeare of King Alfred.

Someone mentioned Moseley and Powell - surely they'd go in the greatest UK villains national day?!

What is the significance of the sword by the reigning monarch?

When Duke and Duchess married the Dukes granny brought a sword with her to the wedding. I know if has some historical significance as the reigning monarch but I dont get why it is used. like its not like it is Excalibur and do all reigning monarchs get a sword?

Answer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown_Jewels_of_England#Swords

Five swords are used during the coronation.

The Jewelled Sword of Offering was made for the Coronation of King George IV. It is the only sword actually presented to the Sovereign during the Coronation (by the Archbishop of Canterbury, to signify that the royal power is at the service of the church); the others are merely borne in front of the Sovereign. It was described by Lawrence Tanner as the most beautiful and valuable sword in the world; the hilt and the scabbard are both encrusted with jewels (which include diamonds, rubies and sapphires) and the blade is of the finest Damascus steel. During the procession in the abbey it replaces the Great Sword of State because that is too heavy to be easily carried.

The Great Sword of State is the largest sword in the collection, and is borne in front of the Monarch by the Lord Great Chamberlain both at the coronation and at the State Opening of Parliament. The gilt handle has crosspieces representing the lion and unicorn and the scabbard is decorated with jewels in the shapes of the floral symbols of the United Kingdom: the rose for England and the thistle for Scotland

The other three swords used are the Sword of Spiritual Justice, the Sword of Temporal Justice, and the Sword of Mercy. The first two symbolise the sovereign's relationship with church and state and the latter represents Curtana, the short sword of Ogier the Dane which he was warned to draw in mercy not in vengeance.

How come Downton Abbey and the British Royal family inheritance rules differ?

So the Queen of England has male cousins like the Duke of Kent and Prince Michael of Kent. How come those guys didnt get to be king under those old fashioned boy-takes-all inheritance rules. On Downton Abbey, this mr. Nobody from nowhere Matthew Crawley gets to be the heir and Mary and her sisters get zilch. Why not Mary be heir like the Queen?

Answer: In England, Peerage rules and rules of Succession to the Throne are different.

Peerages are created through individual Letters Patent which also determine laws of succession to that particular peerage. Typically, women are excluded altogether, with closest male relative by primogeniture inheriting the title. In rare circumstances, titles can only be inherited in direct line (from father to son, excluding other male relatives). On even rarer occasions, female inheritance is allowed, but only in absence of any males heirs. Three examples to illustrate each case:

1. Females are excluded and nearest male inherits
Rupert Onslow, 8th Earl of Onslow has a daughter but no sons. If he dies without sons, his title will be inherited by his closest male relative - his fourth cousin once removed, Anthony Onslow. Rupert's daughter, Olympia, isn't eligible to inherit the title.

2. Females are excluded and the title can be inherited in direct line-only.
Prince Andrew, The Duke of York has two daughters and no sons. The Letters Patent of his title stipulate that it can only be inherited in direct line (from father to son). Thus, if Andrew dies without fathering a legitimate son, his title will become extinct and will merge with the Crown. Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are not eligible to inherit their father's title.

3. Female inheritance is allowed in absence of male Heirs.
It is extremely rare to allow female inheritance in original Letters Patent; usually, further revised Letters Patent are issued giving a female right to succeed in absence of male heirs.
One such example would be the title of Duke of Fife. When Queen Victoria created the title for her grandson, Prince Alexander, 1st Duke of Fife, it's Letters Patent of 1889 contained the standard remainder "heirs male of his body" (his sons in direct line excluding daughters). However, by 1900's there was a strong possibility and the first Duke, who had two daughters - Alexandra and Maud, would die without male issue. Queen Victoria then issued another Letters Patent of 1900, granting the same title to Prince Alexander, but with a special remainder that allowed the title to pass to the daughters of the first Duke, in default of a son, and then to the male heirs of those daughters. Thus, when Prince Alexander died, the title was inherited by his elder daughter Princess Alexandra, 2nd Duchess of Fife. Because Princess Alexandra's only son predeceased her, the title was succeeded by the son of Princess Maud (Alexandra's sister), James Carnegie, 3rd Duke of Fife - the current Duke.

Line of Succession to the British Throne used to be determined by laws of Male Primogeniture. England and Scotland (and their successor states) were among the few European countries that always allowed female succession, albeit in absence of direct male heirs: in other words, females could succeed to the Throne only if they had no brothers (elder or younger). For example:
- Queen Elizabeth succeeded her father, George VI, because he had no sons.
- Queen Victoria was her father's only child
- Mary, Queen of Scots was her father's only child
- Margaret, Fair Maid of Norway succeeded Alexander III of Scotland because she was his only surviving grandchild.

Recently, however, changes have been made to succession laws which establish succession through Equal Primogeniture for the descendants of Prince Charles. That means that if William's eldest child is a girl, she will one day become Queen, irregardless of any younger brothers she may have.

How did the British system of nobility originate?

1. The British system ofd nobility goes King, Duke, Marquess, Earl, Viscount, Baron. How did this system originate?

2. Who was the first king of England, and how did he get there?

Answer: Barons and Earls came over with the Anglo Saxon invaders. The other levels were adopted beginning in the 14th century and were based on titles from the continent.

The Anglo Saxons set up seven kingdoms in England after the Romans left. Eventually Wessex achieved dominance over the other kingdoms, and Egbert was declared Bretenwald which many historians consider to be the first king of England.

Other historians argue that it was Alfred the Great. Since some Danes and Norwegians also ruled for a while, the dynasty is said to begin with William the Conqueror in 1066. Today, William the conqueror descendant's number as a significant fraction of a billion people, so that is most people in Britain, Ileland, Western Europe, Canada, and the USA. Being descended from WC is not such a big deal, but all of the kings have had a fairly strong male descendants from WC.

The present royal family is certainly descended from all of these earlier kings, but they owe their position as royalty to a law passed in 1701 which specified the rules of succession. It is ABSOLUTELY true that other people have stronger blood ties to kings earlier than George I, but the law takes primacy. There are rumors of illegitimacy even after George I, but most are heavily discounted by historians.

Is the duke the second in line to be a king?

Im writing a story, and I want to get my facts right before finishing the chapter. Prince William, whos going to be king after his father, is a duke, so that Im getting the impression that since hes second in line, hes a duke?

Answer: William is a duke because he's the grandson of a monarch, and because his grandmother wanted to give him that title as a gift. It is traditional for sons and grandsons of monarchs to be given peerages on their marriages, though it can happen at other times.

A ducal title can be given to someone who is lower down in the succession. For example, King George V made his third and fourth sons dukes. Prince Harry may be made a duke (though he could receive an earl's title), even though the birth of William's first child will bump him down to fourth in line. Prince Andrew, who was fourth in line by the time he married, was made a duke on his wedding day.

So, I'm afraid there is no hard and fast rule about this.

You do know that there are dukes who are NOT sons or grandsons of monarchs? They are noble dukes, whereas William, Andrew, etc. are royal dukes -- princes given ducal titles.

What will happen to the titles of the Duke of Yorks daughters if he died?

Will both princesses still be called as "Princess D of York" given the fact that their titles depend on the title of "Duke of York"? Suppose the Duke of York died while either or both of his daughters were unmarried and if ever either one or both of them were married, either or both were married to untitled men. Will they still be called "Princess D of York" even if theres no Duke of York?

Answer: Yes, when Prince Andrew, The Duke of York passes away, his daughters will still be known as Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie of York.
Whether there is a Duke of York at the time, or what his relation may be to the Princesses is irrelevant; Beatrice and Eugenie were born with the title.

When Prince George, The Duke of Kent passed away, his daughter was still styled Princess Alexandra of Kent (until her marriage, when she became Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy).

Alternatively, Beatrice and Eugenie may chose to simply go under their House name (and de facto surname) - Windsor.

What were the circumstances surrounding the death of Prince George, Duke of Kent on 25th August 1942?

All I know is that he set of in a Short Sunderland flying plane at 13.10 hrs from Evanton and crashed within the hour.

Answer: Several theories exist as to why the crash occurred, but in 1990, when the "top secret" label was finally pulled off the MI-6 file on the accident, it had disappeared.

Theory 1: Sabotage--The Duke of Kent was assassinated because of his Pro-Nazi sympathies.

Theory 2: The crash was a cover up for the possible death of Rudolf Hess (who was switched with a double). Hess was being kept two miles from where the crash occurred.

Theory 3: The instrument panel of the plane may have been tampered with before it took off for Iceland.

Theory 4: A last minute switch in pilots resulted in an inexperienced pilot flying the craft. Thus, the crash was the result of pilot error.

Theory 5: The plane veered off course to look at something, perhaps a ship.

P. S. -- If MI6 was planning something nefarious, the air space over the Scottish County of Caithness, the least populous county in the United Kingdom, would have been the place to do it.

Could Princess Beatrice of York have a reasonable chance of ascending the throne?

Prince William is an RAF helicopter pilot. The UK governments poor record of maintaining military assets and recent budget cuts increase the risk of a fatal accident involving William. Either that or his wife Kate could be barren with no prospects of legitimate heirs.

Prince Harry is also a helicopter pilot and is currently in the warzone of Afganistan, where the treacherous allies there could turn on him at any moment. That and the risks from his party lifestyle.

So the throne would go to Beatrice of York in the end (the last four monarchs of the UK where all Yorks, George V was Duke of York, Edward VIII was born a Prince of York, George VI was a Prince and then Duke of York, Elizabeth II was born a Princess of York).

Answer: I wouldn't say a reasonable chance, no. There is always a possibility but that applies to anything.

The chances William and Harry dying before having children is slim, especially in these days where healthcare is at the best it's ever been and security is paramount. Interesting point about the line of York monarchs thoughh.
