How does a team compete in the Tour de France?

Lance Armstrong told A. Contador that he couldnt have won the Tour de France without help from his team. I know next to nothing about the sport of cycling, so can someone tell me how a team supports its main cyclist? What role does the rest of the team play, when there is clearly only one winner?

Answer: The team supports its main rider in a number of ways:

The most straight forward are the jobs that the domestique does for his team leader so that he does not waste energy. This includes fetching drinks and food from the team car; riding alongside him in the bunch so that if there is a problem he can hand over a spare wheel, or even his entire bike to the team leader immediately rather than waiting for the team car; pacing him back to the bunch after any sort of incident.

Then there are the strategic/tactical jobs that the team does; keeping the pace of the bunch high so that riders who are a threat to the team leader cannot escape out of the front of the peleton; attacking the peleton and forcing the other teams to chase down a dangerous escape.

The team's job becomes even more important in the mountain stages, when the bunch thins down to far fewer riders. In a weak team the leader might be left with no team mates with him towards the end of a stage. This means he has to fetch his own drink and food and chase down dangerous breaks himself (wasting energy) and is vulnerable if any sort of problem occurs.

It is worth mentioning that the rider at the front uses a lot more energy than riders back in the bunch. At high speed on the flat, the rider at the front of a small group is using 20-25% more enegy. In a large group the advantage is between 30 and 40%. The advantages are less when the riders are moving more slowly on a climb, but are still significant.

How do i participate in the tour de france?

Im a 16 year old boy. I practice cycling everyday. I live in India, Hyderabad..im really interested in participating in the tour de France..but i dont think there are any special..resources..or any institutions in india..which encourage and develop cycling skills..and bring greater opportunities to people with interests in cycling..what do i do? does the government of India help in cycling?

Answer: the Tour De France is only open to UCI registered "trade" PROFESSIONAL TEAMS (Usuall 9 Teamates to a team, 18-22 teams invited to the race)

You would need to 1st get a license from you country to race(Easy), Get permission to race outside of your country(from that federation)
Move to another country(USA or Europe), Apply to that countries' Federation for Another racing liscense.
Then you need to get good enough for a team to offer you a contract to race for them. Start winning alot of races. then a Pro Tour Team will offer you a contract.
spend 5years racing to help someone else win races(a domestique), and maybe then they will let you try to win a race
If you do win races, then the team might assign you to the TDF team

Now that that has happened, Expcect to ride 6-8 hours a day, for 23 days at an average speed of between 24-30 mph(40+kph) and sometimes at speeds of twice that amount (I didnt enven mention the mountains you need to climb

I wrote the above to let you in on what is really involved in getting there

i do hope this doesnt discourage you, because this sport is the best one in the world. start locally(in India, then look into trying to do the races many cycling federation have in and around Asia)

How can you train for tour de france?

I was thinking of aiming for tour de france.
I have no real budget. If i bought an exercise bike how long would i have to ride it each day to emulate the training.
Also would walking for 5 hours a day for 18 days with hilly terrain
emulate the workrate.
I cant even afford a racing bike!
If i got fit enough would it be possible for sponsors to finance everything if i showed adequate ability.
Thanks.

Answer: First while an intriguing idea it takes years of training and then you still might not make it on a Pro team for a chance.

LUCKY for us though you don't have to be on a Pro team to do the ride, several companies offer the tour ride for the typical enthusiast to do. Just not during the race and more tailored to your abilities.
Having ridden the col du Galibier and Alpe d'Huez, you really need to be in shape as the thin air at the high altitudes will cause you to feel weak.

Where is the best place to get free souvenirs in the Tour de France?

Im going to the Tour de France this summer and I dont know what part of the stage you can get good souvenirs from. Can you get them from the beginning, the end, or at any point of the stage? I dont mind paying for souvenirs but of course, I always prefer the free stuff. Im going to the town of Le Grand-Bornand if that helps. Please tell me any info that you know. Thanks.

Answer: The beginning is the best place. The sponsors are all there throwing things to the fans. The end is good, too, but it's a bit more crowded. You could also wait after the feed-zone and hope for a tossed musette bag or a bottle.

Tour de France 2013 route and map: Stage 1 to begin in Corsica ...

The Tour de France will be in uncharted territory when it heads to Corsica for Stage 1 on Saturday. The 213-kilometer course should be dominated by sprinters.

How does one go about entering in the tour De France?

My new dream and goal is to compete in and Finish the tour De France! not nessecarily win, although that would be wonderful, I just want the thrill of saying I raced with the best of the best.

Does anyone know how one would go about training and also registering for such a glorious race?

Answer: 1st get a bike and start riding.
2nd join a cycling - learn how to train correctly
3rd work up to riding 5 to 6 days a week for 1.5 hours or so
4th start entering beginner races and win
5th up your workout times and intensity
6th work your way up to intermediate races and win
7th up your workout times and intensity
8th work your way up to expert level races and win
9th up your workout times and intensity
10th get picked up by a semi-pro/pro regional team
11th race at pro level and win
12th get picked up by a national/international team
13th win races at this level
14th move to a pro tour/TDF eligible team
15th become 1 of the 9 best riders on the team

At this point you may find yourself in the TDF.

FILM; Films That Look Death in the Eye

THE betrayal of the body, decrepitude and death: in 2007 an unprecedented number of serious films, along with the usual slasher movies, contemplated the end of life. Might they be a collective baby-boom response to looming senescence and a fraying social safety net? Or do they reflect an uneasy sense that humanity is facing end times, when global - Stephen Holden article lists top ten films of 2007 that contemplate end of life; photo (L) - By STEPHEN HOLDEN

How do I become the best Tour de France climber?

the tour de france is 2000 or more mile long and goes for three weeks in july.

Answer: first, you need to have a ridiculously low BMI because climbing is a power to weight ratio kind of thing.

i.e. my wife is 96 lbs and 5'2" her BMI is 17.6 this is about right. my BMI is 23.6 at 5'8" and 155 lbs. no matter how much i dream, i have no chance.

Levi is a really good climber for someone his size, but the best are tiny people. i.e. Gilberto Simoni who's BMI is 17.9.

it helps to live and train at a really high altitude so that you're used to the lack of oxygen. think of famous mountains like the rocky's, dolemites, alps, or andee's. there are some really great climbers from Columbia.

lastly, spend 8 hours a day on your bike starting now!

Tour de France: Whats the difference between the mountains?

The commentators for the Tour de France keep mentioning that some riders prefer the Alps to the Pyrenees and vice versa. Does anyone know what makes the two mountain ranges so different to ride?

Answer: the pyrenean climbs are steeper, generally somewhat shorter, and the roads are narrower and in worse shape.
the alps are, by contrast, longer and gentler, with better pavement.

the climbing syles of the individual riders are suited to one or the other (or neither), but not usually both types.

In the tour de france can someone win more than one jersey? Which do they wear if they have polka and green?

Also has Lance Armstrong ever won anything else but the yellow in the tour de france. Obviously the yellow jersey is the best but how would you rate the other jerseys.

Answer: Yes...you can win more than one jersey. Eddy Merckx won all the jerseys, I think in the '70 Tour. Only man to do it. One does take presidence over the other. The man in 2nd place in each jersey standing will wear it. So on and so fourth. You get the jist of it.

Ok, I guess I was wrong. Eddy won them all in '69.

Why is the team so important in the Tour de France?

Ive always wondered why the team is so important in Tour de France. For example, in todays stage, Contador was in the leading group with the two Schleck Brothers. The commentators said that Contador would have been better off if he had his teammate riding in the same group. Why would this make any difference?

Answer: If Contador had 2 or 3 team mates he could have broken away from the Schleck brothers and put more time between his team and the brothers. The guy leading the pack is doing most of the work and it helps to be able to switch off and rest behind the leader. He played it smart and stayed with them and never took the lead. He just let them do all the work and was hoping the team would catch up with him. He did not want to help them put more distance between him and the team.

The guys ridding behind the leader can use 30% less energy to go the same speed. It's like drafting in NASCAR the guy in back uses a lot less gas.
